FAQ’s

Can’t my dentist clean & polish my teeth?

Yes they can. However, the Dental Hygienist is an expert in this area and they love providing this service. An effective clean takes time and whilst some people have very good oral hygiene and only require a simple clean that their dentist can provide, others need longer in the dental chair. If you required an extended clean with your dentist or PGT visits, this would also cost more with your dentist than a dental hygienist as their professional fees are higher.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by plaque. If the plaque is not removed with brushing, flossing and rinsing, it penetrates beneath the gum line and attack the gums, making them inflamed. You may also experience some bleeding when you brush your teeth.

If left untreated gum disease can cause serious problems. The gum may start to recede from the tooth. This then creates spaces or ‘pockets’ around the tooth where even more plaque can form. In time the plaque eats away at the bone that supports the tooth. The tooth then becomes unstable and may have to be removed.

Can I help prevent gum disease?

Gum disease can be prevented with good dental hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Make sure you pay special attention to area where your teeth meet your gums. Visit your dentist and your dental hygienist regularly a they will be able to spot gum disease early on and remove any tartar that you have not removed with brushing and give you advice and help motivate you. Finally if you smoke, stop smoking. Smoking accelerates gum disease.
