A dentist who scooped a bronze medal at the British Empire Games back in 1950 is to be an Olympic torchbearer for London 2012.

Tony Chivers, MBE, was celebrating having been successfully being chosen.

The 91-year-old vice president of the BDA Benevolent Fund has secured his moment in history 62 years after scooping a bronze medal in the three-mile run at the Empire Games held in Auckland in New Zealand.

Nominated by the Benevolent Fund, Tony was formerly its chairman and is a recipient of the MBE for his services to dentistry.

Still a keen sportsman, he spends a great deal of his time raising awareness and funds for charity, having most recently completed a 100-mile rowing challenge in aid of the Ben Fund and the Dentist’s Health Support Trust.

The London 2012 Organising Committee received tens of thousands of exceptional nominations for the honour of Torchbearer during its ‘Moment to Shine’ campaign.

Competition was incredibly tough, with only 8,000 places available for people to carry the Olympic Flame across the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey for the Olympic Torch Relay.

After serving his country as an RAF pilot during the War, he went on to have his own practice in Hampshire. In 1996 he was awarded the MBE for his services to dentistry.
