Fresh breath
It is always a sensitive issue but rest assured that bad breath or halitosis is a very common issue. The majority of bad breath comes from bacteria in the mouth that produce gases that have an unpleasant smell. These bacteria live in the areas that you miss when you clean your teeth. Bad breath can also be caused by diet (garlic, onions etc) and by smoking (drying of the mouth causes nicotine and tar to build up).
The first step to take to reduce bad breath is to brush and floss correctly – at least twice a day. This will help remove the bacteria that create the odour. You can also use interdental brushes or tongue scrapers. If this first step does not solve the problem you may require professional cleaning by a hygienist.
Your appointment with a hygienist has two key benefits. Firstly, care will be taken to thoroughly clean and polish your teeth. You will be amazed how much fresher and cleaner your teeth will feel. The second benefit is that you will be given advice on your cleaning technique and on products that may make it easier for you to be more effective in your own home. Many people like to visit the hygienist before important meetings, interviews or even their weddings.
