Illegal Teeth Whitening is a ‘Health Gamble”

Teeth Whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures we offer at Far Headingley Dental Care. Our General Dental Council (GDC) registered clinicians are legally allowed to provide this service and we only source our teeth whitening materials from reputable companies who offer a safe product.

An article today on bbc.co.uk highlights how the general public are being duped by people posing as dental clinicians and offering dangerous illegal whitening products, that in addition to causing pain and permanent tooth damage, can also cause life threatening cancer.

The British Dental Association(BDA) warns that these illegal products would be like “brushing your teeth in bleach”.

The BDA also highlights “Such high levels of hydrogen peroxide (found in illegal teeth whitening products) are likely to cause irreparable harm to teeth and gums, including blisters and burns to the gum and damage to nerves and tooth enamel”.

Unfortunately people are choosing illegal whitening on the grounds of cost. The reality is you get what you pay for and if you want to whiten your teeth with a safe product, that is provided by a trained and registered dental health professional in a safe environment, there are costs associated with this.

At FHDC we provide two teeth whitening services. The first, Boutique Teeth Whitening, is our at home product. Our stronger product that can only be applied in a dental surgery by a dentist or a dental hygienist-therapist is Enlighten Teeth Whitening. Before any teeth whitening is provide at Far Headingley Dental Care to a patient, they have to be assessed for suitability.
