Bad breath can be caused by a variety of things but it is most frequently down to poor oral hygiene. If bacteria is allowed to build up in your mouth for example on bits of food stuck between your teeth, it starts to release gases which smell. Bad breath can also be a sign of gum disease. Smoking, drinking alcohol and eating strongly flavoured food can also cause bad breath. It can also occur following an illness, or sometimes it can be caused by certain types of medicine.
The good news is that bad breath in most cases is easily treated by adopting a positive dental hygiene routine. Our Dental Hygienist at Far Headingley Dental Care can provide you with a thorough clean and polish to remove the plaque and calculus where bacteria can grow in your mouth. You will also be provided with Oral Hygiene Instruction so that you can follow your own positive dental hygiene routine at home. This advice will include a discussion about what you eat and drink and if you smoke, the effects of this will be explained.
There are a wide range of oral health products available to help you maintain a positive oral hygiene routine at home and prevent bad breath from reoccurring. Your Dental Hygienist will be able to advise you which type of toothbrush is most suitable for you, which floss to use, whether or not you would benefit from using intra oral brushes and which type of toothpaste and mouthwashes would be best.
