Here we have before and after treatment photographs for what can be achieved by teeth straightening at Far Headingley Dental Care.
Teeth straightening or ‘orthodontic treatment’ is used to improve the appearance, position and function of crooked or abnormally arranged teeth. Orthodontic treatment can straighten the teeth and move them into a better position.
Having crooked teeth or large gaps between your teeth can cause problems. Food and bacteria could get stuck between the teeth which could cause decay. Similarly, if your teeth stick out, this could cause problems with mouth ulcers and decay, or with speech. Your dentist might suggest that you have your teeth straightened through orthodontics i.e. by wearing a brace.
There are two distinct type of teeth straightening available. Traditional orthodontics uses devices such as braces to correct the position of the teeth. Your exact treatment will depend on the problems with your teeth. In some cases you may need to have some teeth removed as part of your treatment. For traditional orthodontic teeth straightening the length of treatment will depend on how complicated the problem is, but it’s usually between 18 and 24 months.
If orthodontic treatment is recommended, you may have to decide whether to have treatment privately or via an NHS Orthodontist. NHS orthodontic treatment is free for people under the age of 18 with a clear clinical need for treatment. However, because of the high demand for treatment, there can be a long waiting list for NHS orthodontic treatment.
If you don’t qualify for free NHS treatment, or you don’t want to wait for treatment to start, you may choose to have private treatment. Private treatment is widely available with an average fee of between £2,000 and £6,000.
Six Month Smiles and Quick Straight Teeth are a modern twist on traditional orthodontics through a technique called ‘Short Term Orthodontics’ and deliver straighter teeth by focusing on straightening a patients front teeth. These systems have taken the best aspects of braces and modified the treatment and the materials to give adults a common-sense, cosmetic solution that fits your lifestyle. If you do not want to have braces attached to your teeth (even for only a few months with short-term ortho), you may wish to consider Invisalign Clear Braces instead as these can be removed for eating and your daily oral hygiene routine.
At FHDC we want your teeth to look beautiful. This is why we include free Teeth Whitening with all of our teeth straightening systems. Once you have completed your Invisalign, Quick Straight Teeth or Six Month Smile we will provide you with complimentary Boutique at home teeth whitening.
A common complication of orthodontics is tooth decay. Your mouth is full of bacteria which combine with small food particles and saliva to form a sticky film known as plaque. which leads to plaque and causes the enamel to decay. Many people with braces find it difficult to keep their teeth clean.
Additional brushing is essential during treatment. To reduce your risk of enamel decay, your orthodontist may recommend using toothpaste with high levels of fluoride or a mouthwash that contains fluoride. You should also try to avoid sugary foods and fizzy drinks. Regular dental hygiene visits are also important when you are wearing braces.
